September 07, 2021 | Women's Tennis
STARKVILLE - Coming off the program's ninth NCAA Championships appearance, Mississippi State's women's tennis team is ready to continue improving upon their success last year.
Â
MSU will have up to seven events to compete in this fall which includes two invitational tournaments, an International Tennis Federation W15 tournament, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-American Championship, and the John Cade Invitational which will be hosted in its very own A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre.
Â
"We have a busy couple of months coming up with a challenging fall tournament schedule," said Daryl Greenan, who begins his 13th year as State's head coach and is the program's all-time wins leader. "Our team looks pretty good for this time of year and they have all been working hard since returning to campus a few weeks ago."
Â
The season will start off in Greenville, S.C. where the Bulldogs will compete in the Furman Fall Classic on Sept. 17-19. MSU will then send players to the W15 ITF in Hilton Head, S.C. for the week of Oct. 4-10.
Â
State will also take part in the Roberta Alison invite in Tuscaloosa, Ala., over the weekend of Oct. 29-30.
Â
The Bulldogs will be hosting the John Cade Invitational on the weekend of Nov. 5-7 that will include matches against Georgia Tech, Memphis, Denver and Ole Miss.
Â
State will also take part in two ITA events in the month of October. First up will be the ITA All-American in Charleston, S.C., over the week of Oct. 4-11. The next ITA event will be the ITA D-1 Southern Regional in Tuscaloosa, Ala., from Oct 14-19, where the Bulldogs hope to qualify for a spot in the ITA National Fall Championships in San Diego, Calif., on Nov. 4-7.
Â
The team features six returning players from a squad that advanced to the NCAA Championships for the fifth time in the last seven years under Greenan. This includes the ITA Southern Region Rookie of the Year Chloé Cirotte as well as All-SEC selections in Magda Adaloglou and Emma Antonaki. Antonaki was also only the fifth bulldog to ever be tabbed an ITA All-American and reached the NCAA Singles Round of 16.
Â
"They bring valuable match experience to the table," Greenan said. "Everyone is looking forward to competing. We expect bigger and better things this year and I look forward to seeing some big wins in tournament play over the next several weeks."
