Women’s Golf Uses Record Third Round to Complete Mason Rudolph Championship
September 26, 2021 | Women's Golf
FRANKLIN, Tenn. – The Mississippi State women's golf team completed the final day of the Mason Rudolph Championship on Sunday afternoon. MSU used a strong third-round score of 13-under par (275) to finish tied for 11th place with Clemson. The Bulldogs and Tigers both carded a three-day total of 8-over (872).
Hannah Levi led the Bulldogs throughout the tournament. She finished the tournament tied for 19th and carded 1-under for the event. Levi birdied the fifth most times in the tournament, finishing with 14.
Blair Stockett and Julia Lopez Ramirez both recorded their best round of the tournament in the final round. Stockett and Lopez Ramirez both finished tied for 38th for the event shooting 3-over (219). Stockett carded six birdies in the final round. The third-round score of 6-under by Stockett is tied for the fifth-lowest individual round in history. Lopez Ramirez shot 4-under (68) in the final round. Lopez Ramirez birdied five times on the day.
"It's a really strong testament to Blair and Julia because they didn't just become better golfers from one day to the next," Ewing said. "It was really a mindset thing, and I'm really proud of them for, after not having the best rounds the first two days, coming back and having really strong rounds today. It takes a lot of trust and belief in yourself to have that strong of a bounce-back like they did."
Valeria Mendizabal shot 1-under in the third round to bring her three-day total to 3-over (219) for the event to tie for 38th. Competing individually in her collegiate debut, Elle Fox carded her best round in the third, with 1-over (73) to finish tied for 73rd at 13-over for the event.
As a team, the Bulldogs carded 13-under par in the third round. 13-under ties the lowest third-round score in history, and the first time the Bulldogs have shot 13-under in the third round since 2013. 13-under par third-round score is the second-lowest round in history at MSU. It was the fourth time MSU women's golf has carded a 13-under par round and the first time since the 2021 SEC Championship. Mississippi State carded the fifth most birdies of all teams in the event with 46.
"It's really encouraging that we had our best round on the final day," head coach Charlie Ewing said. "As a whole, the week was not what we wanted, but every round matters. It doesn't matter where we stand going into the final round. I challenged them to go out there and just forget about what could happen and just go out and have around that you can be really excited about. There are a lot of positives that can come from a final round like we had today, even when the week as a whole wasn't what we wanted."
Mississippi State will return to action on October 4th when the Bulldogs open play at the Windy City Collegiate Classic hosted by Northwestern in Chicago, Illinois.
