STARKVILLE – Mississippi State women's tennis roster will receive some immediate assistance for the spring with the signing of Alessia Tagliente.
Tagliente inked with the Bulldogs on Tuesday and is set to enroll in January.  The native of Turin, Italy will be eligible to compete during the spring schedule.
"We're really excited to be getting a player of Alessia's caliber," said MSU associate head coach Sachin Kirtane. "She's got a lot of experience playing in ITF tournaments all over the world. We're also really excited because we've had such a good connection with Italian players on the men's team. So it's excited for us to get our first Italian on our team."
Tagliente is close friends with MSU men's tennis player Davide Tortora, who is also from Italy. Tortora vouched for Tagliente's talents to Kirtane and head coach Daryl Greenan and helped cultivate that relationship during her recruitment.
It also did not hurt matters that four members of MSU's women's roster also hail from Europe.
"She was recruited by a lot of schools and I think she really liked the girls on the team," Kirtane said. "With her being from Europe and us having a lot of Europeans on the team really helped her in picking us. She understands that the SEC is probably the premier conference in college tennis and she wants to test herself against the best players in the country. That's exactly the type of player that we are looking for, one that wants to compete at the highest level."
The 19-year old right-hander currently holds a 1831 ITF singles ranking and posted a career-best 997 in May 2019. She also held a 108 ranking in U16 Tennis Europe.
"She has all the right intentions and is a hard worker," Kirtane said. "She's a good competitor. I think she gives us a lot more depth when she comes in January."
