Mississippi State Makes Second Trip To Scenic City
September 19, 2021 | Men's Golf
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – For the second time in program history, Mississippi State men's golf team will travel to the Honors Course located in Chattanooga, Tennessee, to compete in the Scenic City Collegiate for the first time since 2006. State's tee off time is still to be determined.
Â
The 15-team, 75-player field will get started with 36 holes on Monday, Sept. 20 before Tuesday's final round at the par-72, 7,290-yard course. Live stats will be available via Golfstat.
Â
"We have had several solid days of reflection, growth and preparation these past ten days," Head Coach Dusty Smith said, "I am excited for this next step as we continue to strive to be the very best version of us that we can possibly be. We know the focus has to be on us, our daily standard of living out toughness, and living up to our standard. Our ultimate goal is to be better at the end. This week will be a great step for us as a team as we work towards that goal."
Â
Mississippi State returns to Honors Course for the first time since 2006 when they shot a team score of 901 and placed third.
Â
The Bulldogs will be competing against host Chattanooga, No. 7 Vanderbilt, No. 10 Clemson, No. 14 Georgia, LSU, Ole Miss, and seven other teams from across the country.
Â
The MSU lineup will consist of Ford Clegg, Hunter Logan, Jay Nimmo, Austin Vukovits and Ben Nelson. Vukovits will be making his season debut.
Â
Last season, Clegg was the only Division I men's golfer to be named a First Team Academic All-American. He currently leads the team with a 71.67 stroke average this season and is coming off a tied for 17th finish at the 2021 Carmel Cup.
Â
Logan competed in Chattanooga in June with a 5-under showing at the Chattanooga Choo Choo Invitational to place eighth. He fired 12 birdies in MSU's season opener at the Carmel Cup.
Â
This will be Nimmo's second collegiate start for the Bulldogs. He made his collegiate debut at the Carmel Cup and shot a 1-under 71 in the middle round with nine total birdies over three rounds.
Â
In the 2020-21 season, Vukovits played in three events, all as an individual. During the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship (3/26-28/21), he carded three birdies in the second round.
Â
Nelson looks to continue his stellar career with the Maroon and White. The Madison, Mississippi, native shot 3-under 69 in his first round of the season at Pebble Beach and tallied 11 birdies in the season-opening tournament.
Â
Sophomore Harrison Davis will also be playing as individual in the Scenic City Collegiate. This will be Davis's first tournament competing with Mississippi State. Â
