Soccer Hosts UAB In Exhibition Tuesday

STARKVILLE – The Mississippi State soccer program will host UAB for a preseason exhibition match on Tuesday, Aug. 10 at 6 p.m. CT.

The Bulldogs are coming off a 2020-21 campaign that saw them post a 6-4-3 record while winning their final four matches. State has shut out its opponent in each of its last three contests.

MSU returns a veteran roster for head coach James Armstrong's third season with 11 seniors on the team. After losing just five letterwinners from last year's team, Armstrong added 11 freshmen and transfer Gwen Mummert from Louisiana. State lost just one player that played more than 150 minutes last season with the departure of senior captain Kristen Malebranche.

"We are excited to play someone else other than ourselves, particularly a talented team like UAB," Armstrong said. "The game will allow us a chance to evaluate some of the concepts we have been working on in training and look at different combinations of players."

Along with veterans including leading scorers Onyi Echegini and Monigo Karnley, the Bulldogs feature a core group of sophomores that gained plenty of experience in their first season. That class totaled 5,531 minutes in 2020-21.

While MSU's defense was a highlight in its four spring matches, the Bulldogs also saw plenty of scoring. Seven different players found the back of the net in the second half of the schedule, and 11 players recorded an assist.

Admission is free for all home MSU soccer matches. Gates will open one hour before kickoff. Live stats will not be available for the exhibition season, and the two matches will not be broadcast.

The Bulldogs will also travel to South Alabama on Saturday, Aug. 14 for a final exhibition match against the Jaguars. Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m. in Mobile. MSU opens the regular season on the road at Lipscomb on Aug. 18 at 6 p.m.
