Diamond Dawgs and Cavaliers meet for the third time in program history at the College World Series
STARKVILLE - The No. 3 Mississippi State baseball program will enter its Tuesday (June 22) matchup with Virginia after winning its Colllege World Series opener in its fourth straight trip to the event. It will be the third meeting between State and Virginia, with the last meeting between the two teams coming in the 2013 Charlottesville Super Regional. Below are 10 quick notes to look at before the Diamond Dawgs take on the Cavaliers winner's bracket game at 6 p.m. CT at TD Ameritrade Park.

- For the third time in Mississippi State history the Diamond Dawgs have posted back-to-back 45-win seasons, joining the 1984-85 (45 & 50) and 1989-90 (54 & 50) squads. The 46 wins are currently tied for No. 7 all-time in MSU history.
 - The Diamond Dawgs own the nation's longest streak to CWS appearances at three and have been to five straight NCAA Super Regionals, which is an NCAA-best streak.
 - Chris Lemonis is the first Division I head coach to reach the College World Series in his first two seasons as head coach of a program in the Super Regional era (since 1999).
 - The first strikeout against Virginia will give the Mississippi State pitching staff the most strikeouts in a season in NCAA history. The Diamond Dawgs own 765 strikeouts currently, tied with Ole Miss (2021) currently.
 - With 21 strikeouts against Texas, Mississippi State set the College World Series record. The final strikeout of the game moved State past Ohio State's 20 strikeouts against Washington State in a 15-inning game in 1965. The game versus Texas marked the fifth 20-plus strikeout game in the program history and ranks No. 2 all-time at Mississippi State.
 - Will Bednar and Christian MacLeod enter the College World Series rank No. 1 and 2 in MSU history for strikeouts by a freshman.
 - Tanner Allen and Rowdey Jordan took over the top spot in MSU's College World Series record book, as they each started their eighth game in Omaha.
 - As a team, Mississippi State has hit 70 home runs, which ranks No. 10 in program history. It is the first season of 70-plus home runs since 1999. The 2021 edition trails the 1983 squad (72) for No. 9.
 - MSU drove in two RBIs against Texas to move its season total to 401 and mark the 16th season in program history with at least 400 RBIs.
 - The last time Mississippi State held opponents to a lower batting average in at least 300 innings pitched, Richard Nixon was president.
