The first full season under head coach Chris Woods finishes for the men.
EUGENE, Ore. – Mississippi State track and field's Keshun Byrd and Shayla Broughton highlighted the third day of the NCAA Track and Field Outdoor Championships for the Bulldogs.
Â
Byrd competed in the triple jump, finishing in 24th place with a best jump of 15.33m.
Â
Overall, after three days of competition, the Bulldog men finished tied for 15th with 17 points alongside conference foe Kentucky. The LSU Tigers claimed the men's national title with 84 points.
Â
"For our first full season in two years, I'm proud of the way our men competed on the men's side," said head coach Chris Woods. "It's been a long year and despite the few bumps along the way, we had some amazing performances culminating in a top-20 team finish. We are an extremely young team and this team's accomplishments sets the stage for our expectations in the coming years. We will be back and stronger in the future! This was a great accomplishment and I'm looking forward to Shayla finishing strong in tomorrow's heptathlon and bringing home some hardware to Starkville."
Â
"We did well as a team at this meet," said associate head coach April Thomas. "We have areas we will improve on, but this was a great starting point and gives our student-athletes something to shoot for in the future. I'm excited about what's to come!"
Â
After a year off the track due to the COVID-19 pandemic, navigating the difficult world of living in a pandemic, countless testing appointments, working through injuries and setbacks, the men of Mississippi State track and field came out in the top-15 of the NCAA.
Â
Each one of the men who competed at the Championships earned an All-American title. All three of the javelin men, DJ Jónsson, Tyriq Horsford and Sindri Guðmundsson, earned First Team All-American honors. The 4x100m relay of Shamar Rose, Keldrick Edwards, Okheme Moore and Cameron Crump, as well as Crump in the long jump, earned Second Team accolades. Jesse Henderson in the 110m hurdles and Keshun Byrd in the triple jump earned Honorable Mention All-American honors.Â
Â
A young squad teeming with talent, all the men who competed at the Championships will return but one. Guðmundsson is the only one who will be moving on from the world of collegiate track, as he was a graduate transfer for the 2021 season.
