Broughton Leads Heptathlon at Crimson Tide Invite

Through four of the seven events, Shayla Broughton leads both the Dawgs and the event.
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Mississippi State track and field team had three competitors in the heptathlon on Thursday to start out the Crimson Tide Invitational, and Shayla Broughton leads both her fellow Bulldogs and the entire heptathlon going into Friday's competition.

Thursday had the decathlon and heptathlon competing exclusively, with both multi events set to finish on Friday.

Going into the second day of competition and through four out of the seven heptathlon events, Broughton leads with 3,384 points, Asia Poe is in second at 3,288 points, and Aley Woodberry in seventh at 3,175 points.Â

To start the day and the heptathlon off, Broughton won the 100m hurdles with a time at 13.53. Poe followed just behind in second at 13.83, a new personal best. In fourth was Woodberry at 14.14, a personal best for her as well.Â

In the second event of the day, the high jump, Poe won at a height of 1.76m. When the bar was set at 1.70m, both Poe and Broughton were still in with a competitor from South Alabama. Broughton didn't pass the height and would finish third, but Poe and USA's Hanna-Mai Vaikla moved onto 1.73m. There, Poe cleared the bar in her first try and left Vaikla to go onto 1.76m, which Poe cleared on her third try. Poe executed all three attempts at 1.79m, but couldn't clear it. Woodberry finished 11th in the event at 1.58m.

Going into the third event, the shot put, Poe had moved into the leading position with 1,931 points and Broughton was in second at 1,864. Woodberry was in seventh with 1,637 points.

In the shot put, Woodberry led the trio, finishing in fourth at 11.83m. It was her first-ever attempt at the shot and she impressed. Broughton came in seventh at 11.28m, a personal best, and Poe was in 11th at 10.06m, another personal best.

With three events finished, Broughton was back in first place with 2,478 points, Poe in second at 2,464, and Woodberry stayed in seventh with 2,287 points.Â

In the 200m, Broughton came in second at 24.79, Woodberry in third at 24.99, and Poe in sixth with a personal best of 25.70.

Trent Zelden will start the rest of the day off for the Dawgs with the hammer throw, beginning at 5:30 p.m. The men's and women's 1500m and 5000m will follow to end the day.

Friday's competition will be broadcast on the SEC Network + platform from ESPN, with coverage beginning at noon.
