Grimwood, Martinez Named McWhorter Award Nominees

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Mississippi State's Ela Grimwood of women's golf and Daniel Martinez of men's golf were nominated for the H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship, the SEC announced Thursday.
The H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship has been presented by the SEC to the league's top male and female scholar-athletes since 1986. This year's scholarship recipients will be selected on May 18 by an SEC Faculty Athletics Representatives committee representing all 14 member institutions.

The SEC provides the league's male and female McWhorter Scholar-Athlete of the Year Post-Graduate Scholarship recipients with a $20,000 post-graduate scholarship. The 26 remaining male and female finalists for the award will also receive a $10,000 post-graduate scholarship.
Previous Mississippi State recipients of the McWhorter Scholar-Athlete of the Year Post-Graduate Scholarship are Burke Masters (1990 – Baseball), Aimee York (1993 – Volleyball), Tammy Newlon (Women's Basketball – 1994), April Ecke (1995 – Women's Cross Country), Jeremy Jackson (1998 – Baseball) and Scott Westerfield (2001 – Football).

- Named to the Mississippi State President's List eight times
- Boasts a 4.0 GPA
- 2018-19, 2019-20 SEC Community Service Team
- Completed 50 hours of community service during the 2019-20 academic year
- Ranks 10th in MSU history in career stroke average (75.52)
- Recorded four top-20 finishes, including a career-best 11th place finish at the 2018-19 Westbrook Invitational
- Earned a spot in the starting lineup for MSU's 2019 NCAA Regional Appearance
- Served as a student coach during the last two seasons after medically retiring following the 2018-19 campaign
Martinez

- Competed at the 119th U.S. Amateur in 2019
- Finished seventh at the Memorial Amateur Championship in 2019
- Five-time President's Scholar (Fall 2018, Spring 2019, Fall 2019, Spring 2020, Fall 2020) encompassing every semester he's been in Starkville
