ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – Mississippi State's men's golf opens postseason play this week at the par-70 Sea Island Golf Course for the SEC Championship starting on Wednesday morning.
The five-day event will consist of the teams competing in traditional 54-hole stroke play through Friday. Saturday and Sunday will wrap up the tournament with the top eight teams competing in match play.
The 14-team field includes seven ranked squads including No. 10 Georgia, No. 11 Texas A&M, No. 14 Auburn, No. 15 Vanderbilt, No. 17 Florida, No. 22 Arkansas and No. 23 LSU.
"Postseason is the best time of year," head coach Dusty Smith said. "It's what you work for all season long. This will be a great test for us on a championship golf course. We have talked a lot this week about focusing on our game and our process."
State's lineup will consist of Ford Clegg leading and Garrett Johnson playing the No. 2 spot. Clegg (70.38) and Johnson's (72.43) stroke averages lead the team. Clegg smashed his previous career-low round with a 63 earlier in the season at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate. Johnson shot his lowest round of the season, a 68, at the Gator Invitational and matched it at the Old Waverly Collegiate.
Freshman Loïc Ettlin will play out of the third spot in the lineup with Hunter Logan taking the fourth slot. Senior Austin Fulton rounds out MSU's squad. Ettlin made his debut this season at the Vanderbilt Legends Collegiate where he shot a collegiate-career-low of 67.
"This week is about us staying in the present moment, trusting our preparation and having a great sense of awareness for how we are feeling during the tournament," Smith added. "We need to have the ability to focus deeply on hitting the shot at hand. We have a lot of belief as a team and a strong belief in each other."
The Bulldogs will tee off at 8:50 a.m. CT on Wednesday morning from the 10th tee along with Ole Miss and South Carolina.
