The newcomer has already made his mark on the javelin program at State.
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Mississippi State track and field's Sindri Guðmundsson has earned himself the SEC Male Field Athlete of the Week honor after throwing the top javelin mark in the NCAA in his first competition as a Bulldog.
The Conference announced the first round of weekly awards for the outdoor season on Tuesday, March 30.
Guðmundsson, a transfer from Utah State originally from Kópavogur, Iceland, threw a mark of 77.77m at the Al Schmidt Bulldog Relays. He swiftly became the SEC and NCAA leader with that throw in his first meet as an SEC student-athlete.
Prior to the Bulldog Relays, he had not competed since 2019 due to the coronavirus and battling back from injury. But as soon as he was able to throw, he immediately made his mark on the record books.
His throw is now the No. 5 all-time performance at State, passing Corwyn Aldredge's mark of 75.74m recording in 1984. He joins the high caliber ranks of Anderson Peters, Curtis Thompson, Nicolas Quijera, and Tyriq Horsford. They make up the top-four all time.
Heading into week two of collegiate competition, April Thomas' javelin program makes up three of the top-five student-athletes in the NCAA: Guðmundsson at No. 1, Horsford at No. 4, and freshman DJ Jónsson in the No. 5 slot.
Next up for the Bulldogs is the Florida Relays in Gainesville. The Gators host the meet this Friday and Saturday, April 3-4.
