Broughton Finishes 11th In NCAA Championships Pentathlon

Next, it’s Jesse Henderson’s turn at the NCAA Indoor Championships.
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Mississippi State track and field's Shayla Broughton finished the pentathlon in 11th with 4,061 points at the NCAA Indoor Championships on Thursday.
She becomes a USTFCCCA Second Team All-American with that finish.
The redshirt senior had a 1,000-plus point start in the 60m hurdles, finishing in third overall and second in her section at 8.37, worth 1,046 points.
In the high jump, she finished at a height of 1.69m for 842 points, bringing her overall total to 1,888 points going into the shot put.
She was just shy of tying her personal best in the shot, coming in 11th in the event at 11.44m. She earned 624 points for that mark and totaled 2,512 going into the fourth event of the day.
The long jump saw her finish in seventh at a mark of 5.87m, giving her 810 points. With four events under her belt, she had 3,322 points as she lined up for the 800m.
She finished in 13th in the 800m, crossing the finish line in a new personal-best time of 2:26.37. She earned 739 points from the race.
Overall, Broughton completed the pentathlon with 4,061 points and in 11th place at the NCAA Indoor Championships.
She competed against five other women from the SEC, three from the ACC, two from the Big Ten, one Big 12, one Mountain West, one Pac 12, and one WCC pentathlete. One of the fellow SEC pentathletes was Texas A&M's Tyra Gittens, who broke the collegiate record, the meet record and the facility record with 4,746 points.

The rest of the NCAA Championships is focused on Jesse Henderson for the Bulldogs. He will compete in the 60m hurdle semifinals on Friday with the hopes of making it to the finals on Saturday. The junior has a personal-best, school-record 7.74 time in the hurdles. His plan for the weekend is to break that record once more. The semifinals are set to begin at 2:15 p.m. The meet will be broadcast on ESPN3.
