Women’s Basketball Defeats UT Martin in Final Road Game of 2021
December 12, 2021 | Women's Basketball
MARTIN, Tenn. – Mississippi State takes care of business Sunday afternoon on the road, earning the 54-37 victory at UT Martin.
Rickea Jackson was the Bulldogs' leading scorer, finishing with 19 points, seven rebounds, and three 3-pointers. Denae Carter was aggressive on defense with five blocked shots, making her the first Bulldog with five blocks in a game since Jessika Carter did it against Jackson State last season.
Myah Taylor chipped in with seven points, six assists and four steals of her own. This was Taylor's fourth game this season with at least four steals. Raven Farley also contributed across the board, scoring four points, grabbing nine boards and blocking three shots. Caterrion Thompson added nine points off the bench on 3-6 shooting from behind the arc. Thompson's nine points were the most in a game of her Bulldog career.
The Bulldogs led 22-18 at the half but quickly opened up the third quarter on a 9-0 run to extend their lead to 11. The run was sparked by the first five points of the game from JerKaila Jordan, who ended the day with eight. State would end the quarter on a 12-3 run, seven points coming from Myah Taylor, and ultimately outscored the Skyhawks 23-11 in the third period, taking firm control of the game.
MSU continued their shot-blocking spree, swatting another 11 shots as a team, 73 blocks on the year. This marks the fourth game of the year that the Bulldogs have blocked double-digit shots. The Bulldogs outrebounded UT Martin 40-39 while also winning the turnover margin 7-15. This is the first game the Bulldogs have held an opponent under 40 points since January 26, 2020, when MSU beat Ole Miss 80-39. UT Martin's 37 points are the lowest number scored by an opponent since LSU scored 35 on January 31, 2019.

On shooting a lot of threes
"If you can get it inside out, there was a beautiful one where Myah dribbles underneath the basket and then made an inside out pass to either [Caterrion] or JerKaila and I knew that shot was going in. Everybody on the bench knew that shot was going in. There are certain three's where the percentages are in you favor and if we take 30 of those, I'm okay with it."
