
PREVIEW: Women’s Basketball Will Host Alabama State in Season Opener Tuesday

STARKVILLE – The Mississippi State women's basketball team will officially tip-off its 2021-22 season Tuesday at 6 p.m. when the Bulldogs host the Hornets of Alabama State inside Humphrey Coliseum.

The Series
• This will be the fifth all-time meeting between the two programs, with State holding a 4-0 advantage.
• The last meeting came on Dec. 20, 2016, which MSU won 90-47.
• The first meeting between the two schools was held on Dec. 6, 1989, in Starkville. State defeated ASU 94-54.
Preseason Accolades
• Myah Taylor and Anastasia Hayes were named to the Nancy Lieberman Award watch list, an award given to the nation's best point guard. This is Taylor's second consecutive season earning a spot on the watch list. She was also one of 10 Finalists for the award last season.
• Rickea Jackson was named to the Cheryl Miller Award watch list, honoring the nation's best small forward. Jackson was also voted to the Preseason All-SEC First Team by the League's head coaches.
Taylor Excelling as MSU's Floor General
• Myah Taylor enters the 2021-22 season as one of the nation's best point guards. Last season, she was known as an elite passer. She improved her points per game, nearly doubling her ppg output from her sophomore to junior season (5.6 ppg to 9.9 ppg).
• She finished with double figures in 11 different games last season after achieving that feat just six times during her freshman and sophomore seasons combined.
• Although her scoring increased, Taylor remained an elite passer. She ranked 29th in the NCAA, fourth in the SEC, with an assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.36. In a shortened season, she dished out 78 assists and averaged 4.1 assists per contest.
The Roster At A Glance
• Mississippi State's roster features 15 players representing 10 states and Germany.
• State's roster is highlighted by players from all over the country, with Bulldogs coming to Starkville from New. Jersey, Georgia, Florida, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Ohio, Tennessee, Pennsylvania and Texas.
• For the eighth-straight year, State's roster will include at least one foreign player, with Charlotte Kohl coming to Starkville from Giessen, Germany. Chinwe Okorie (Nigeria) played for the Bulldogs from 2013-17, while Chloe Bibby (Australia) was on the roster from 2017-20.
• State will have three sisters on its roster during the 2021-22 season in Anastasia Hayes, Aislynn Hayes and Alasia Hayes. Anastasia is a redshirt senior and spent the last three seasons at Middle Tennessee State. She played her freshman season at Tennessee and was named the SEC Sixth Woman of the Year. Last season Anastasia finished second in the NCAA in scoring average (26.5 ppg) while also earning C-USA Player of the Year and First Team honors. Her sister Aislynn also played at MTSU and earned Second Team All-CUSA honors last season. As a freshman, she was named the C-USA Freshman of the Year. The youngest of the trio is Alasia, who played in 13 games last season at Notre Dame.

Following its game vs. Alabama State on Tuesday, Mississippi State will host South Dakota State on Friday, Nov. 12 at 6 p.m. and Alcorn State on Sunday, Nov. 14. At 5 p.m.
