'Dogs Perfect On Day 1 Of John Cade Invitational
November 05, 2021 | Women's Tennis
STARKVILLE - Mississippi State women's tennis team achieved an extraordinary perfect slate at Day 1 of the John Cade Invitational, going 12-0 on Friday with many dominating victories.
The tone for the day was set in doubles play with the Bulldogs going 6-0 with several strong wins.
MSU's No. 41 ranked duo of Emmanouela Antonaki and Tamara Racine picked up two emphatic wins with the first coming against Alisha Reayer and Camila Romero of Memphis 6-3, and the second against Denver's Britt Pursell and Camille Verden-Anderson 6-2.
The newly formed duo of Magda Adaloglou and Alexandra Mikhailuk also picked a pair of wins. Adaloglou and Mikhailuk took down both of their opponents 6-3 with the first coming against Sasha Gorchanyuk and Tatiana Simove of Louisville and the next was against Denver's Tatum Burger and Andrea Burguete Beltran.
The other new tandem of Chloé Cirotte and Marta Falceto followed the trend of their teammates with two more victories. In their first match, they defeated Blessing Nwaozuzu and Anna Smith of Xavier 6-3 and followed it up with a victory against Louisville's Dina Chaika and Tyra Richardson 6-4.
Singles play went much of the same way with each woman picking up a win.
The marquee victory of the day was Adaloglou's upset win over No. 100 Ahmeir Kyle of Xavier. After a back and forth first set, Adaloglou fell in a very close tiebreaker 6-7(7). However, she was able to lock in and win the next two sets with ease 6-2, 6-2.
"I trusted myself and said 'I'm going to make it'," said Adaloglou. "I have worked so hard for this and I know I am ready. I stayed positive. The most important thing I did was I locked in. I got in my zone and stayed in the moment. I said to myself that I had to be more calm and at the same time high-energy. I just relaxed and things came easy."
It was Adaloglou's first ranked win of the fall in singles play.
"I am really impressed with Magda's performance," said head coach Daryl Greenan. "I am impressed with how solid she was all day. From the warm-up through the doubles and in through the singles. She could have easily been distracted after losing the first set. She kept her head up and just stayed solid. She got a big win and beat a good player. She got a ranked win, which is exciting."
Antonaki, who is ranked 22nd in the country, dominated Denver's Britt Pursell in straight sets 6-1, 6-1. Two courts over, Cirotte won similarly in straight sets when she took down Dina Chaika of Louisville 6-4, 6-0.
In the second slate of singles matches, Racine emerged victorious over Monika Dedaj of Georgia Tech 6-2, 6-2/ Simultaneously, Falceto defeated Memphis' Miriam Grossman in straight sets 6-0, 6-2. Mikhailuk finished MSU's perfect day with her win against Kat Lyman of Xavier 6-3, 6-3.
"Across the board [play was great]," said Greenan. "You expect Emma to win, but she won in such convincing fashion and played such impressive tennis. I saw that in singles on just about every court today. When we play that well, it is always nice. We knew there was going to be some tough competition. We felt strong going in. We felt like we were ready, but a lot of things had to go our way to go 12-0. The doubles started it off. We got it done on every court. Definitely encouraging and we better be ready for tomorrow."
Day 2 of the John Cade Invitational will start Saturday at 10 a.m. CT with the third and final round of doubles. Afterwards, there will be one round of singles.
Antonaki and Falceto will take on Andrea Burguete Beltran and Taylor Melville of Denver. No. 43 Adaloglou and Cirotte will face Georgia Tech's Monika Dedaj and Mahak Jain and one court over Mikhailuk and Racine are set against Miriam Gromann and Dolavee Tumthong from Memphis.
The first set of singles will begin at 11 a.m. with Mikhailuk facing Ole Miss' Rachel Krzyzak, Falceto will go toe-to-toe with Xavier's Anna Smith, and Racine takes on Anna Roggenburk of Xavier.
In the second set of singles at 12:30 p.m., Adaloglou goes against No. 27 Sabina Machalova of Ole Miss, Antonaki will seek to take down Georgia Tech's 65th-ranked Ava Hrastar, and Cirotte will face Andrea Burguete Beltran.
