MSU Hosting Inaugural John Cade Invitational
November 04, 2021 | Women's Tennis
STARKVILLE - The Mississippi State women's tennis team will end their fall season at their own inaugural John Cade Invitational at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre and Rula Tennis Pavilion from Friday-Sunday.
It is the second consecutive year MSU's women's tennis has hosted a fall event. Last year, they hosted the Hail State Classic which included Alabama and Ole Miss. The John Cade Invitational will be on a much larger scale with seven teams participating including Xavier, Ole Miss, Louisville, Memphis, Denver, and Georgia Tech.
"It is great to [close out the fall at home]," said head coach Daryl Greenan. "We love playing at home. We love having the opportunity to host something like this with having the indoor courts available. We are excited about finishing the season strong"
The John Cade Invitational begins at 10:00 a.m. CT each day. Friday will have two rounds of doubles and a round of singles. Saturday will have a round of doubles and a round of singles. A final round of singles will wrap up the invitational on Sunday.
"It is going to be a good tournament," said Greenan. "We are all excited about getting as many matches in as we can. The way the format is, everybody should get three singles and three doubles matches which is a full load for a three-day tournament. I think we are all excited about the level of competition we will see this weekend."
In the first round of doubles, the 41st-ranked duo in the country of Emmanouela Antonaki and Tamara Racine will face Memphis's fifth-year duo of Alisha Reayer and Camila Romero. Magda Adaloglou and Alexandra Mikhailuk will face Sasha Gorchanyuk and Tatiana Simova of Louisville. Then, Chloé Cirotte and Marta Falceto will face Xavier's Blessing Nwaozuzu and Anna Smith.
The second round of doubles will start at 11:00 a.m. where Antonaki and Racine will take on Denver's Britt Pursell and Camille Verden-Anderson while Cirotte and Falceto will face Dina Chaika and Tyra Richardson of Louisville. To wrap up doubles for the day, Adaloglou and Mikhailuk go toe-to-toe with the senior duo from Denver of Taylor Melville and Toni Nelson.
Singles play will start at 1:30 p.m. with No. 22 Antonaki facing Denver's Britt Pursell. At the same time, Adaloglou will take on No. 100 Ahmeir Kyle of Xavier while Cirotte will go against Louisville's Dina Chaika.
The final round of singles will begin at 3 p.m. with Racine going head-to-head with Georgia Tech's Monikia Deda meanwhile, Mikhailuk will face off with Kat Lyman from Xavier. Falceto will close out the day against Memphis' Miram Grossman.
"[Competing in high level events] has been our emphasis the whole fall season," said associate head coach Sachin Kirtane. "We trust the caliber of players we have … They are playing good players every single time they step out onto the court. Playing in the SEC, and playing the schedule we are playing, that is something we need to do."
The last action the entire team competed in was at the ITA Southern Regional Championships in Tuscaloosa, Ala. from Oct. 14-18.
At that tournament, Antonaki and Racine shined in singles and doubles play. Antonaki made it all the way to the semifinals in singles play. Meanwhile, Antonaki and Racine also made it to the semifinals in doubles play. Racine also did very well in singles play, making it to the quarterfinals and defeating No. 45 Carolyn Ansari from Auburn in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 in the round of 16.
Although Adaloglou and Cirotte both competed at the ITA Southern Regional Championships, their marquee victory of the fall came at the Debbie Southern Fall Classic in Furman, S.C. on Sept. 17. There, they defeated Wake Forest's Brooke Killingsworth and Anna Brylin, the No. 8 pair in the country, 6-3.
Falceto and Mikhailuk last action took place at the Roberta Alison Invitational in Tuscaloosa, Ala. from Oct. 29-30. At the event, MSU's pairing defeated Anastasiia Khrustaleva and Andrea Widing of Wisconsin 6-3. Mikhailuk also picked up a singles win over Indiana's Xiaowei Hu 7-6(1), 6-0.
"In the end, Daryl and I are very pleased," Kirtane said. "We are a better team than when we started in August. That is what we look at in the fall, the progression. We are healthier and fitter. We are competing at a higher level. We are excited to host and watch them play."
