Women’s Basketball defeats Mississippi College in exhibition contest
November 01, 2021 | Women's Basketball
STARKVILLE – On Monday night, the Mississippi State women's basketball team opened its 2021-22 season with a 94-47 victory over Mississippi College. The contest was State's only preseason exhibition before officially opening play on Nov. 9 against Alabama State.
"We have a primary ball-handler in Myah Taylor and Anastasia [Hayes]. They are great point guards. We also have two other bust-out dribblers that can lead a break in Rickea Jackson and Jerkailia [Jordan]. They are really good at making decisions. The floor gets really spaced, and some people like to get back in conversion defense. Sometimes teams are trying to figure out who they are guarding when a different person is bringing down the ball. We need to space quicker and earlier to maximize the space that we are going to have within a possession."
MSU started slow but eventually found its footing, shooting 45% from the field and 35% from three. Mississippi State was strong on the defensive end, holding Mississippi College to just 33% shooting and 20% from the three.
Rickea Jackson led all scorers with 22-points on 9-of-14 shooting, 3-of-5 from three, in just 17 minutes for action. Anastasia Hayes and Aislynn Hayes had memorable debuts for State. Anastasia scored 14-points while adding five rebounds, while her sister scored 13 and added three assists.
State opened the game on a 16-0 run, started by a Jackson triple while holding Mississippi College scoreless for the first seven minutes of the contest. The Bulldogs took a 21-7 advantage into the second quarter and continued to add to its lead, opening the second frame with five straight points from Jackson.
Midway through the second, Raven Farley began to make her presence felt down low. Farley scored seven straight points for the Bulldogs while grabbing four offensive rebounds in the process. Following Farley's strong play, Ashley Jones and JerKaila Jordan started to find their groove on the court, scoring the following eight MSU points, six straight coming for Jordan.
State scored 50-points in the first half but didn't take their foot off the gas. Jackson came out firing with back-to-back triples to start the third before Anastasia added one of her own, and State's lead ballooned to 44-points (71-25). State remained in the front the rest of the way, enjoying a 50-point cushion late in the third before finally closing out the game with a 95-47 victory.
