Soccer Closes Homestand With No. 22 Auburn
October 06, 2021 | Soccer
STARKVILLE – Mississippi State will play its second soccer match against a ranked SEC team on Thursday night when the Bulldogs host No. 22 Auburn to close a three-match homestand. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. CT, and the match will be broadcast on SEC Network+.
Head coach James Armstrong is quite familiar with the Tigers after spending six years on the Auburn staff prior to arriving in Starkville.
"Obviously, I've got a ton of respect for that program and the coaching staff there," Armstrong said. "They're on a really good run right now. They've got some great wins against top-ranked opponents such as BYU and Texas A&M. They've beaten a number of teams that are going to have really good seasons, so Auburn brings a lot to the table on both sides of the ball."
Armstrong holds a 1-0-1 record against Auburn as a head coach, defeating the Tigers in his first season and playing to a 1-1 draw a year ago. Meanwhile, Auburn comes into the match riding a seven-week streak as a ranked team while outscoring opponents, 28-11, this season.
The Bulldogs picked up their first conference victory in their last match with a 1-0 defeat of Kentucky. The shutout was the sixth of Maddy Anderson's career and she is now tied for ninth in MSU career history. Her four shutouts on the year are tied for eighth in Bulldog single-season history. State has won seven of its last nine home matches with six shutouts in that span.
Alyssa D'Aloise scored her first career goal against the Wildcats, and Ally Perry recorded her team-leading third assist on the play. Perry was named the SEC Freshman of the Week for her efforts.
"At this time of the season, you focus more on yourselves and how we can be better," Amstrong added. "Every team is going to be difficult at this moment in time. None more so than Auburn, but we're looking forward to the challenge."
Fans in attendance can look forward to a Fall Festival at the MSU Soccer Field complete with pumpkin painting and caramel apple lollipops. Children will be selected to compete in sack races at halftime. Admission to all MSU home games is free.
The Bulldogs go on the road on Sunday, Oct. 10 when they make the short drive to Tuscaloosa to meet Alabama. Kickoff against the Crimson Tide is scheduled for 1 p.m. CT on SEC Network+.
