Colas, Hernandez Head To ITF Tallahassee 15K
October 24, 2021 | Men's Tennis
TALLAHASSEE, Fla., – Mississippi State's Alberto Colas and Carles Hernandez both hope to capitalize on their success last week as they embark on the ITF Tallahassee 15K.
"Florida is a really beautiful place and we're going to enjoy that for sure," Hernandez said. "But we're going to play in a pro tournament and we don't get to play in too many of those. It's a huge opportunity for us to play some matches there."
Hernandez, a sophomore, will get things underway bright and early Monday morning with his qualifying match against American Codrin Miller at 8 a.m. CT. Colas will follow suit around 9:30 a.m. against American John Bernard.
Bernard, a redshirt freshman at Florida State, will have the luxury of playing on his home court.
Colas and Hernandez – both Spaniards - reached the quarterfinals as a doubles team at the ITA Southern Regionals last week in Auburn, Alabama. Hernandez was also able to advance to the quarterfinals as a singles competitor.
Colas, a junior ranked No. 92 in the ITA rankings, also had a main draw singles win at the event.
"I had a pretty good tournament last week at the ITA Southern Regionals in Auburn," Colas said. "I was taking care of the things that happen that are under my control. I think I did a really good job of taking care of those things and the results are secondary. But I'm feeling good, feeling confident with this last pro event of the fall and if I continue taking care of the things I can control, then the results could come and the performance is going to be pretty good."
It is the second ITF tournament the Bulldogs have participated in this fall, having opened their slate in Fayetteville, Arkansas last month. Hernandez played in that event but the Tallahassee 15K will be Colas' first ITF action of the fall.
Colas currently holds an ITF singles ranking of 1092 while Hernandez is rated at 1286.
