Colas, Hernandez Each Collect Qualifying Wins
October 25, 2021 | Men's Tennis
TALLAHASSEE, Fla., - The Mississippi State contingent of Carles Hernandez and Alberto Colas are moving on to the second round of qualifying matches after a pair of singles wins on Monday at the ITF Tallahassee 15K.
Â
Hernandez breezed by American Codrin Miller to begin the tournament. The sophomore blanked Miller 6-0 in the first set and followed up with a 6-2 victory in the second.
Â
Colas was in for a more competitive match later on in the morning, going all three sets. The junior inched out a 7-6(6) first set against Florida State's John Bernard but decisively lost the second 6-1.
Â
But Colas was able to keep his composure and rallied to win the third-set tiebreaker 10-5 to advance on.
Â
"Alberto and Carles started the tournament on a high note today with two good results," said MSU assistant coach Jake Jacoby. "Carles was focused the whole match and took care of business from start to finish. Alberto had a tougher match and stayed tough mentally throughout to dig deep and earn the win against a solid player on his home courts. It was a good start for the Bulldogs today, and we will look to continue building tomorrow."
Â
The two Spaniards on Mississippi State's roster are scheduled to play their second round matches around 9:30 a.m. CT on Tuesday. Hernandez goes head-to-head with Canadian Christian Lakoseljac, a former Penn State product. Colas collides with Francisco Rocha of Portugal.
Â
The Bulldogs do have some familiarity with Rocha. The Middle Tennessee State senior lost his match against MSU's Florian Broska 6-4, 6-2 back on Jan. 29.
