Bulldogs Win Late Thriller Over Texas A&M
October 21, 2021 | Soccer
STARKVILLE – A pair of goals in the final four minutes lifted Mississippi State to its first ever victory over Texas A&M by a score of 2-1.
"I think we saw tonight that they just never stop," head coach James Armstrong said. "The girls continued to believe that we can beat anybody we play against. It was a much-needed win for those girls and all the effort they've put in. I couldn't be prouder of the group tonight, for sure."
MSU (4-7-3, 2-5-1 SEC) had fallen behind, 1-0, in the 20th minute after Texas A&M's Maile Hayes headed the ball in off a corner.
"We just felt that something was going to come our way," Armstrong said. "We were going to get more chances now that we had the composure and maybe a little bit of lady luck. Thankfully for us, we kept going, and we got the chance we were looking for to put it in."
State responded in the second half with a relentless attacking pressure, outshooting the Aggies (6-8-2, 2-5-1 SEC), 11-3, in the final 45-minute frame. In the 85th minute, the Bulldogs started to get rewarded for their efforts as Andrea Tyrrell grabbed her fourth career goal for the Maroon and White.
Niah Johnson served a corner in that Onyi Echegini headed on target. The rebound on the save deflected off Hailey Farrington-Bentil to the foot of Tyrrell.
Three minutes later, Alyssa D'Aloise scored her second career goal and second game-winner with a strike from outside the box into the top corner of the net. Echegini was also credited with an assist on that play.
The Bulldogs now head to Fayetteville, Arkansas, on Sunday to face the No. 7 Razorbacks at 6 p.m. CT. State will return home for Senior Night on Thursday, Oct. 28 against in-state rival Ole Miss. The Magnolia Cup will air nationally on the SEC Network at 6 p.m. CT.
