Bulldogs’ Fight Not Enough in Loss to No. 4 Arkansas
October 24, 2021 | Soccer
STARKVILLE – Two second-half goals proved the difference as Mississippi State fell, 2-0, at No. 4 Arkansas on Sunday night.
MSU (4-8-3, 2-6-1 SEC) showed its fighting spirit in the first half, keeping the Razorbacks (14-2, 9-0 SEC) off the scoreboard thanks to Maddy Anderson's five saves.
"We went toe to toe with a very, very good Arkansas team, who are deservedly ranked in the top-5 in the country," head coach James Armstrong said, "We will take the lessons learned from tonight into the next game."
Twelve minutes into the match, Andrea Tyrrell shot a rocket just wide of the goal. A 42nd minute shot from Onyi Echegini toward the bottom center would have put the Bulldogs ahead, but was saved by the Razorback goalkeeper.
Two minutes into the second half, Arkansas struck the ball into the back of the net to give the Razorbacks a lead they wouldn't surrender. Two big, back-to-back saves from Anderson in the 66th minute kept the Bulldogs within reach until a 69th minute goal gave Arkansas a 2-0 lead. MSU almost had a goal, but an 83rd minute shot by Rylie Combs bounced off the crossbar.
Anderson's 10 saves on the night are an SEC career-high and trail only her 13-save outing at Iowa earlier this season. The Bulldogs have yet to allow more than two goals during their 2021 campaign.
State will return home Thursday, Oct. 28, to defend the Magnolia Cup against in-state rival No. 13 Ole Miss. Kickoff in that match is set for 7 p.m. CT on the SEC Network. Thursday night's contest will also be Senior Night for the Bulldog soccer program.
