Bulldogs Return Home to Face Texas A&M
October 20, 2021 | Soccer
STARKVILLE – Anything is possible with great leadership. That's the message head coach James Armstrong is preaching as his team begins its final two-match week of the regular season in a SEC matchup with Texas A&M on Thursday night.
Â
Mississippi State and the Aggies will kick off at 6 p.m. CT in a nationally-televised match on the SEC Network.
Â
"Overall, staff and players, they've done a good job of embracing and trusting the process [so far this season]," Armstrong said. "We just have to keep believing in what we're doing and keep getting better each game. We have great leadership, and when you have that anything is possible."
Â
The Bulldog soccer program has been on the verge of a breakthrough in October but has lost its last three matches, all by one goal. On Friday night, State (3-7-3, 1-5-1 SEC) took No. 10 Tennessee to the wire, but saw a tying goal cleared away in the final minute. The Bulldogs held the Volunteers to their lowest shot total of the season (9) and second-lowest shots on goal total (4) of the year.
Â
On the other side of the ball, MSU racked up six shots on goal, its most since a 2-2 draw at Georgia. The Bulldogs are currently outshooting its opponents 159-136 this season and hold the shots on goal advantage, 70-65.
"Texas A&M is one of those perennial powerhouses in the SEC soccer world," Armstrong said. "They're well organized and well coached and have really good attacking players. We're going to have put our best foot forward and hope we can capitalize on the training we've had this week."
Â
MSU Athletics has partnered with the MSU Staff Council for Faculty and Staff Appreciation Week at the Bulldogs' events this week, encouraging staff members to attend Thursday night soccer and this weekend's volleyball matches.
Â
Additionally, fans in attendance will receive free cheese fries, and State will also wear pink warmup tops in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Admission to Bulldog soccer matches is always free.
Â
The Bulldogs will return home next Thursday, Oct. 28, when State looks to defend the Magnolia Cup against in-state rival Ole Miss at 7 p.m. MSU will celebrate Senior Night ahead of its final televised match on the SEC Network.
