Men's Tennis Bound For ITA Southern Regionals

AUBURN, Ala.,– Members of Mississippi State's men's tennis team head to ITA Southern Regionals hosted by Auburn University in hopes of qualifying for the ITA Fall National Championships in San Diego, Calif., next month.

ITA Southern Regionals begin on Thursday and run through Oct. 19 with the singles finalists and doubles champions all advancing to the National Championships. Players from Alabama, Alabama State, Alcorn State, Auburn, Jacksonville State, Louisiana, LSU, Ole Miss, Samford, South Alabama, Southern Miss, Troy, Tulane and UAB are participating at the event.

"For some of us it's a completely new experience," said MSU sophomore Carles Hernandez. "It's my second year and the whole team is really excited. We're all playing amazing tennis so I really think any of us can have a good run there. We're really pumped to go there and have a good tournament."

Redshirt freshman Seth Richey will start things off for the Bulldogs on Thursday at 9 a.m. against Juan Rodriguez of Alabama State in a qualifying match.

The rest of State's singles squad will get started in the main draw on Saturday. Hernandez meets Tulane's Billy Suarez in the opening round. Suarez lost to Florian Broska in the MSU Bulldog Invitational 6-7(8), 6-4, 6-3 on Oct. 1.

Broska – ranked 27^th nationally - will match up against Auburn's Jan Galka at this event. Gregor Ramskogler battles Boris Kozlov of LSU while No. 54 Davide Tortora and No. 92 Alberto Colas drew opponents from Ole Miss.

Tortora takes on Simon Junk while Colas competes against John Hallquist Lithén. Tortora defeated Junk during the spring season 6-3, 4-6, 1-0(6).

The Bulldogs' sixth-ranked doubles team of Broska and Ramskogler along with Colas and Hernandez receive a first round bye while Richey and Tortora team up against Ruan Du Preeze and Samrakshyak Bajracharya of Alabama State on Friday at 4:30 p.m.
