State Women’s Tennis Ousts Memphis 6-1 To Improve to 3-0
January 29, 2021 | Women's Tennis
STARKVILLE – Mississippi State's women's tennis team captured its third consecutive victory to start the 2021 season Friday in a 6-1 decision over Memphis indoors at the Rula Tennis Pavilion.
With the win, State improved to 3-0 on the season, marking back-to-back seasons that the Bulldogs have done so. MSU has won the last 15 meetings with the Tigers and has now recorded 41 consecutive non-conference victories in Starkville, dating back to the 2013 season.
"We expected a tough match today and we got one," head coach Daryl Greenan said. "We saw Memphis at our tournament a couple weeks ago, and we expected a battle. Fortunately we played some of our better tennis of the season. Our doubles was very solid, and we were almost flawless in a couple positions in singles. On a few courts, we didn't play our best but similar to last weekend, we competed to come out on top in a couple of close sets and matches."
The Bulldogs didn't take long to jump ahead on Friday, as courts 2 and 3 posted quick doubles victories over the Tigers. At the No. 2 position, Magda Adaloglou and Lilian Poling gave State an early advantage, downing Sophie Abrams and Josephine Cao by a convincing 6-1 decision. Emma Antonaki and Alexandra Mikhailuk followed suit on court 3 with an impressive 6-2 triumph over UM's Hannah Davies and Alisha Reayer to claim the doubles point for the Bulldogs. The tandem extended their team-leading win streak to five matches with the victory.
Chloé Cirotte and Tamara Racine were handed MSU's lone doubles setback of the match as Tigers Katherine Cao and Aran Teixido Garcia edged State's duo a 6-4 setback.
State would claim the first three matches to finish in singles to clinch the victory, and five of the six singles contests overall.
Mikhailuk picked up the first victory for MSU, rolling past Memphis' Laura Bente 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 4 position. The Burlington, Ontario, native has recorded five straight victories and has won in seven of her last eight singles outings.
Then, the true freshman Cirotte continued the Bulldogs' success on court 6 with straight-set domination over Tiger Camila Soares 6-1, 6-2 to move to 2-0 in singles in dual match play in her young MSU career.
The senior transfer Poling then clinched the match for State, fighting out a 6-4, 6-3 triumph over Katherine Cao on court 5.
In the next match complete, Antonaki defended her SEC Player of the Week honors on court 2 as she came out on top over Memphis' Reayer 6-2, 7-5 to extend her team-leading win streak to 10 matches. The 69th-ranked Antonaki remains perfect in 2021 at 10-0 overall (5-0 singles, 5-0 doubles).
The Tigers' only point of the match would come at the No. 3 spot where Teixido Garcia edged out State's Adaloglou 6-4, 2-6, 1-0(5).
The last match of the day came at the top position. There, MSU's Racine overcame dropping the first set 6-0 to rally back and down Memphis' Abrams in a tough 0-6, 6-4, 7-6(5) triumph, moving her to 2-1 at the No. 1 position in State's lineup this season.
The Bulldogs will continue their seven-match homestand on Sunday as they host Southeastern Louisiana and Samford at 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., respectively, at the Rula Tennis Pavilion.
