Track & Field Enters Indoor Season at Commodore Indoor
January 14, 2021 | Track & Field
The Bulldogs have not competed since February of 2020.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Mississippi State track and field program's indoor season kicks off on Friday, January 15 with a two day meet at the Commodore Indoor hosted by Vanderbilt.
In his second year at the helm of the program, head coach Chris Woods is excited to hit the ground running for the 2021 slate.
"It's been such a long time since we've competed; close to 11 months," said Woods. "Our last competition was February of 2020. The excitement we're having to try to manage this weekend is something like I've never felt before. It's just been so long since we've had the opportunity to see our kids compete."
At the Commodore Indoor, the Bulldogs will face six other SEC foes in Alabama, Auburn, Ole Miss, Missouri, Tennessee, and Vanderbilt's women. State's student-athletes will be seeing a lot of their Southeastern Conference counterparts as all five meets of the regular season are hosted by member institutions.
Day one of the meet will consist of the women's high jump, weight throw, and long jump, while the men will be competing in the long jump and weight throw. It will start with the women's high jump at 4 p.m. Day two is jam-packed with more field events, distance and mid-distance races, as well as short sprints, hurdles, and relays. Saturday's start is at noon with both the women's shot put and the women's 60m hurdle prelims.
Woods' young squad will be put to the test but are up for the challenge of their first collegiate meet. Nine freshmen will be competing in the meet: Jordan Barrow, Omari Hammond, Shacquille Lowe, Gabriel Moronta, Shamar Rose, Terry Smith Jr., Jhordyn Stallworth, Amy Warren and Trent Zelden.
Newcomers Navasky Anderson, Keshun Byrd, and Daniel Pepper will also see their first competition for the Maroon and White.
The meet will be live streamed on YouTube both days and live results will be provided by C.F.P.I. Timing. A recap of each day of competition will be posted to HailState.com after the completion of the day's events.
