Mississippi State leads the series with USM 33-3, and has claimed the last 22 matches against the Golden Eagles. A win would give the Bulldogs their 10th straight season-opening triumph.
The Maroon and White return seven veterans from last year, including 2020 ITA Southern Region Player to Watch Emma Antonaki, who moved up 19 spots to No. 69 in the ITA singles rankings released this week. State's tandem of junior Magda Adaloglou and sophomore Tamara Racine find themselves ranked No. 41 in doubles. Other returnees ready to take the court in 2021 are senior Sara Lizariturry, redshirt freshman Valeria Nikolaev and freshmen Marta Falceto and Alex Mikhailuk.
Two newcomers – senior transfer Lilian Poling and true freshman Chloé Cirotte – look to make their dual match debuts this weekend. Last fall, in her first semester in Starkville, Poling led the Bulldogs with a 10-6 overall record (6-2 singles, 4-4 doubles).
The 2021 campaign marks the 47th season in program history, the 12th with head coach Daryl Greenan at the helm. Greenan has led State to six consecutive winning seasons.
State looks to pick up where it left off when the 2020 campaign was cut short last spring. The Bulldogs were 9-5, 2-2 in the SEC, and had won five of their last seven contests when play was halted in mid-March.
