Antonaki Named ITA Southern Region Player to Watch

STARKVILLE – Emma Antonaki of Mississippi State women's tennis has been named 2020 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southern Region Player to Watch, the ITA announced Monday.
"Emma has been a solid performer at the top of our lineup," head coach Daryl Greenan said. "She has proven her ability to win against the best players in the country. This is a well-deserved award. I believe her best tennis is still to come."
As a sophomore this year, Antonaki compiled an 8-4 record in singles in dual match play at the top two positions in State's lineup. The Athens, Greece, native was on a five-match win streak, including two wins over top 60 opponents, when the season was cut short. In doubles, alongside Alex Mikhailuk, Antonaki held a 5-2 record in dual match play, all on court 2. She ended the shortened campaign ranked 88th nationally in singles.
Antonaki's second season came on the heels of an impressive rookie resume that featured an 11-match win streak at one point as well as a team-high 17 singles wins in dual match play, all at the top two spots in the lineup. She also became the third freshman in program history – and only the second in singles – to qualify for the NCAA Individual Championships. She ended 2019 ranked No. 72 in the country.
After just two seasons with the Maroon and White, Antonaki ranks fourth in career doubles winning percentage and eighth in career combined win percentage in MSU's record books. She has posted 11 wins over ranked opponents overall and holds a 39-26 overall record in singles and 34-20 ledger in doubles. She has been ranked as high as No. 41 nationally in singles and No. 42 in doubles.
Antonaki has reached the singles quarterfinals of the ITA Southern Regional Championships in each of her first two seasons as a Bulldog.
As an ITA Regional award winner, Antonaki will be considered for the national Player to Watch award. The 2020 ITA national awards will be announced Monday, May 25, during a virtual awards ceremony. The awards ceremony can be viewed on the ITA's Twitter, Facebook, and Youtube.
