COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mississippi State women's tennis downed the Missouri Tigers on the road in a 4-1 decision Friday evening in the Bulldogs' 2020 Southeastern Conference opener.
With the win, State (7-3, 1-0 SEC) improved to 8-1 all-time in the series with Missouri (8-5, 0-1 SEC) while also claiming its sixth-straight triumph in the series.
"It was a hard-earned victory tonight," MSU head coach Daryl Greenan said. "It is extra tough to play any team indoors on the road and Missouri is no exception. I think we were all relieved and excited to win the doubles point. We definitely carried that into singles and gained some momentum."
State raced out to a 1-0 lead after clinching the doubles point but not without fighting through two tiebreakers to decide it. The freshman-senior tandem of Marta Falceto and Sara Lizariturry captured the first doubles victory of the SEC season over Eleanor Fay and Elys Ventura of Missouri 6-1 at the No. 3 position. The MSU pair remained perfect (6-0) in dual matches this season while winning their seventh-straight as a duo overall.
The Tigers' duo of Vivien Abraham and Marta Oliveira responded by taking court 2 in a tight 7-6(5) decision over Bulldogs Emma Antonaki and Alexandra Mikhailuk. Then, State's Magda Adaloglou and Tamara Racine came out on top by the same 7-6(5) score against Gabrielle Goldin and Serena Nash to clinch a thrilling doubles point for the Bulldogs. It was their third win in a row.
MSU then jumped out to a 3-0 lead with straight-set singles wins at the No. 1 and 3 positions. The Bulldog sophomore Racine didn't allow her opponent to win a game in her 6-0, 6-0 victory over Missouri's Nash at No. 1. MSU's Adaloglou followed suit with a 6-1, 6-4 defeat of Abraham at No. 3. It was the junior's fourth consecutive win, all having come in straight sets.
Missouri recorded its lone point of the match on court 4, where the Bulldog true freshman Mikhailuk fell to Oliveira in a close 6-4, 6-4 affair.
State's 122nd-ranked Antonaki then clinched the match for the Bulldogs in an intense 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(4) battle with Ellie Wright at the No. 2 position. The Bulldog sophomore saved a pair of match points before finally securing her match and the win for State.
"Tamara's dominant performance at No. 1 was a huge highlight and boost for us," Greenan said. "Magda was solid for our third point. Emma saving two match points and finishing her opponent off with a solid third set tie-breaker was a nice way to clinch. It was a collective effort overall and any SEC win is a big win."
At the time of the clinch, MSU redshirt freshman Valeria Nikolaev and Ventura were in a first-set tiebreaker, tied 6-6 on court 5. At No. 6, MSU's rookie Falceto had established a 6-2, 1-0 lead over the Tigers' Goldin.
The Bulldogs return to action Sunday, March 1, as they host No. 20 Vanderbilt at 1 p.m. CT at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre.
