Danberry Named Naismith Defensive Player of the Year Semifinalist

ATLANTA – After establishing herself as one of the nation's top defenders, Jordan Danberry was named a semifinalist for the 2020 Naismith Women's Defensive Player of the Year by the Atlanta Tipoff Club on Tuesday morning.
This year, Danberry ranks 22nd among Division I players in total steals (71) and is 32nd in steals per game (2.5) to pace a Mississippi State defense that is 12th in the country and leads the SEC in turnovers forced per game (21.4). She has recorded multiple steals in 19 contests this season, including nine outings with four or more steals.
In State's win at Marquette in November, the Conway, Arkansas, native posted a career-high seven steals as MSU forced 28 turnovers in the road victory. Danberry also added 20 points, four rebounds and four assists to pace the Bulldogs. She has recorded multiple steals in nine SEC games so far, including back-to-back contests with five steals against Georgia and Tennessee.
On the offensive end, the graduate guard ranks second on the team in assists (84) and is third in scoring (12.1 ppg). She has shot 50 percent or better from the field in 14 games this year and is shooting a .504 clip during SEC play.
Danberry was one of 10 players from across the nation to be selected for the midseason team and was one of only two SEC players to make the list. This marks her first midseason recognition. She was also tabbed to the Citizen Naismith Trophy Player of the Year Midseason Team.
Former All-American Teaira McCowan won the inaugural Naismith Defensive Player of the Year Award in 2018 and was a finalist for the honor again last season, while Anriel Howard was named to the midseason team a year ago.
