Viveros Sets School Record in Shot Put at Music City Challenge

CLEMSON, S.C./NASHVILLE, Tenn. – An Alicia Viveros school record and two top-five marks in the indoor record books paced the Mississippi State track and field team on Saturday.  Â

Viveros shattered her personal best in shot put and the school record with a toss of 15.33m (50-5.25) for a sixth-place finish. The junior became the first Bulldog woman in school history to eclipse 15 meters.

Giacomo DeLuca and Faith Gilbert landed two times inside the school's all-time indoor top five. DeLuca joined teammate Stephen Jones in the indoor men's 3000 top five with a 8:15.93 and seventh-place finish at the Music City Challenge.

In the women's 200m in Clemson, Gilbert ran a personal-best time of 24.04 that bumped her into second all-time in MSU indoor history. Gilbert had previously cracked the top-5 charts at the 2019 SEC Indoor Championships, finishing in 24.23 to tie for fourth in program history.

"This was a weekend that we wanted to utilize to prepare for conference in a few weeks," head coach Chris Woods said. "We had a number of personal-best performances and a really good team effort that will set us up to be our best in a few weeks. We'll take next weekend off and continue to go compete at our best in a few weeks."

State posted 14 top-10 finishes – including four Bulldogs who placed among the top 5 – on Saturday to conclude a successful weekend in Clemson and Nashville.

Shayla Broughton led the way with a second-place finish in the 60m hurdles final after running a personal-best 8.35. On the men's side, Jesse Henderson crossed the line fifth in the men's 60m hurdles with a time of 8.13.

The Maroon and White's women's 4x400m relay of Cathrina Morris, Shayla Broughton, San'Toria Harris and Destini Pickens continued to dominate, as they took home fourth place with a season-best time of 3:45.37.

At the Tiger Paw Invitational, Charlotte Cayton-Smith rounded out the Bulldogs' top-five finishes as she earned fifth, running the 800m in 2:09.92.

All four Bulldogs who competed in the women's 3000m shattered their career bests by at least eight seconds. Sylvia Russell's personal-best time of 9:41.90 earned her sixth place in the event.
