STARKVILLE – With the SEC Indoor Championships right around the corner, the Mississippi track and field team is set to face tough competition this weekend as they compete in a split meet Feb. 14-15 at Clemson and at Vanderbilt.
"We're looking for the student-athletes in our program, both on the men's and women's side, to better their scoring position in the SEC and work on getting a qualifying mark that will advance them to the NCAA Indoor Championships," head coach Chris Woods said. "We have a couple of athletes right now that are either in a qualifying position today or really close. This weekend is going to be focused on getting a performance that will be really competitive and score in the conference championship meet, as well as qualify and get them safely into the indoor championship."
Several Bulldogs head to Clemson, South Carolina, for the Tiger Paw Invitational, while a large portion of MSU's squad travels to the Music City Challenge hosted by Vanderbilt in Nashville, Tennessee.
23 teams will join the Bulldogs in Clemson, including six top-25 opponents for the men and seven for the women. The men's field includes four of the top-five teams in the latest USTFCCCA rankings in No. 1 Florida State, No. 3 Texas, No. 4 USC and No. 5 Texas A&M. On the women's side, No. 1 USC, No. 3 Texas A&M and No. 5 Texas will join the Bulldogs in the Tiger Paw Invitational.
In Nashville, the men will face ranked opponents in No. 11. Oregon and No. 21 Wisconsin, while the women will compete against No. 9 Oregon, No. 20 Alabama and No. 23 Wisconsin.
MSU opens the weekend Friday at 11 a.m. CT in Clemson with Jada Grant in the women's long jump. In Nashville, State will start at 4 p.m. with the men's and women's high jumps in addition to the women's weight throw.
Madalyn Kish and Emma Hunt get things started on day two for the Bulldogs at 10:30 a.m. in the women's Pole Vault in Nashville.
At Clemson, the first gun on Saturday is set for 11 a.m. with Charlotte Cayton-Smith in the women's 800m. Dejon Devroe and Malcum Tatum will follow at 11:20 a.m. in the men's 800m.
Six Bulldogs claimed individual event titles at the Power 5 Invitational (Feb. 1-2). Multis shined in the event, including Shayla Broughton who took home the silver medal in the women's pentathlon with a personal-best score of 3,862 points, which ranks fourth in school history.
