Ellis enters his 42nd season in the broadcast booth for the Diamond Dawgs in 2020
STARKVILLE – With 10 trips to the College World Series and over 2,500 broadcast of Mississippi State baseball, the Voice of the Diamond Dawgs, Jim Ellis, has been named the 45th recipient of the prestigious Wilbur Snypp Award, presented annually by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association for outstanding contributions to college baseball.
 Â
Ellis, a native of West Point, Mississippi, and a 1969 graduate of Mississippi State University enters his 42nd season on the airwaves for the Bulldog baseball program. He has also spent time as the play-by-play voice for football and men's basketball following the retirement of legendary voice Jack Cristil. He called men's basketball games from the start of the 2011-12 athletic season until 2016-17 and spent the same seven fall seasons calling State's football games.
Â
Calling Diamond Dawg baseball since 1979, Ellis also spent time with the hoops broadcast team from 1983-2011 before assuming the play-by-play duties. Among the memorable moments, Ellis was there for the program's 1996 NCAA Final Four run. He became a radio analyst for MSU football in 1991 before taking over the play-by-play duties in 2011 and was on the call for the memorable 2014 Bulldog football season that saw the program rise to the No. 1 ranking for the first time in program history.Â
Â
On the diamond, Ellis has called 31 of State's 38 NCAA Tournament appearances and brought to life the College World Series from both Rosenblatt Stadium and TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha. He has been on the call for over 2,500 baseball broadcasts, five SEC regular season titles and all seven SEC Tournament championships.
Â
In addition to his play-by-play duties, Ellis has served as the weekly call-in show host for all three sports and hosted the weekly coaches' television shows. In 1998, 2002, 2013 and 2014, Ellis was named "Outstanding Broadcaster in Mississippi" by the National Sports Media Association (NSMA) while representing Bulldog Sports Network and Learfield's Bulldog Sports Properties.
Â
Ellis is the latest to join the ranks of Wilbur Snypp Award winners, national journalists and college administrators as the 2019 winner. The honor memorializes longtime Ohio State sports information director and NCBWA founder, the late Wilbur (Bill) Snypp. Snypp was a noted contributor to the writers' organization, which was initiated in 1962, as well as an officer in the group. The Wilbur Snypp Award yearly honors a professional for contributions to the sport of college baseball. Voting is conducted by a panel of previous winners, who include past NCAA College World Series directors, College Sports Information Directors of America Hall of Fame members, decorated media members, and others.
Â
Ellis will kick off season No. 42 at 1 p.m. when the Diamond Dawgs host Wright State on Opening Day at Dudy Noble Field.
