by Brian Ogden, Assistant Director/Communications
STARKVILLE – Bulldog softball is back in Starkville as Mississippi State will host Alabama State for its home opener on Wednesday afternoon. First pitch has been moved to 2 p.m. CT in light of thunderstorms in the forecast.
The Bulldogs are coming off a 4-0 weekend that saw them claim the NFCA Leadoff Classic title with wins over three teams that were also receiving votes in the preseason polls. While MSU remains receiving votes in this week's major polls, Justin's World of Softball has coach Samantha Ricketts' squad at No. 13 in its rankings.
State's pitching staff recorded two shutouts over the weekend and boasts the second-best ERA in the SEC at 0.52. The Bulldogs are averaging 9.3 strikeouts per seven innings and just 2.1 walks. Grace Fagan leads the conference with a 0.94 opponent's batting average, and her 0.70 ERA is fourth.
A pitching duel may be in store, however, as Alabama State's Skyler Sullivan has not allowed a run or a hit through 11.0 innings of work this season.
