Clegg Paces Golf Dawgs In First Round Of The Season
October 05, 2020 | Men's Golf
The sophomore is tied for fourth after shooting two-under on Monday
FAYETTEVILLE, Arkansas – Mississippi State's men's golf team finished its first round of the season tied for 11th at the Blessings Collegiate Invitational on Monday.
The Golf Dawgs carded a total 304 to tie with Ole Miss at the SEC's season opener shooting 16-over par.
Sophomore Ford Clegg paced the Bulldogs, finishing the first day in a tie for fourth. He shot three birdies to come in two strokes under par.
"I am proud of our fight out there today," head coach Dusty Smith said. "It was great seeing us compete again in something that matters. Ford did a fantastic job pacing the team today and played a huge round. We need to clean up some simple mistakes. We can't be sloppy on a course that is very demanding. We were on the wrong side of perfect just too much today. We have a lot of golf to be played and I am very confident in our team and in the character of our team."
Sophomore Ben Nelson also collected three birdies during the opener and carded a 76. Senior Garrett Johnson shot a 6-over 78.
Junior Austin Fulton shot two birdies to collect a score of 80, while junior Cameron Clarke shot three birdies to finish with a 10-over 82.
Tournament action continues on Tuesday, and State will tee off at 10:45 a.m. on Hole 10.
