BATON ROUGE, La. – The Mississippi State men's tennis team will be guaranteed a singles champion Sunday as Davide Tortora and Gregor Ramskogler are set to face off in the Tiger Draw title match at the LSU Invitational.
The freshman Tortora and sophomore Ramskogler both notched semifinal victories Saturday to move into Sunday's Tiger Draw final. Tortora had a marathon battle, showing poised confidence as he ousted Texas A&M's Raphael Perot 6-4, 6-7(4), 6-1. Meanwhile, Ramskogler made quick work of Arkansas' Nicolas Rousset 6-3, 6-1.
Day two opened up with doubles play once again with two MSU tandems playing in the quarterfinals. The second-seeded Bulldog duo of Florian Broska and Nicolas Ocana started the day by defeating Texas A&M's tandem of Hady Habib and Stefan Storch 8-6. In the semifinals, State's pair would drop a tough 8-5 affair to the duo of Ronnie Hohmann and Rafael Wagner of host LSU. In another quarterfinal, State's Nemanja Malesevic and Stedman Strickland dropped a close 8-5 affair to the LSU duo of Malik Bhatanager and Ben Koch.
In consolation doubles action, Alberto Colas and Gregor Ramskogler breezed past Razorbacks Josh Bortnick and Foster Rogers 8-0. The duo would then drop an 8-4 affair to Texas A&M's Hady Habib and Stefan Storch. Malsevic and Strickland dropped an 8-4 affair to Texas A&M's Guido Marson and Pierce Rollins. MSU's Tortora paired with LSU's Tom Pisane but the split team fought tough but fell 8-5 to Arkansas' Aleska Bucan and Rousset.
In other main draw singles play Saturday, the true freshman Malesevic wrapped play in the Purple Draw, as the No. 3 seed fell in a tight 6-4, 7-5 semifinal decision to the top-seeded Habib of Texas A&M.
State had four singles consolation matchups on the day. The MSU junior Broska would fall short in his contest, as he dropped a very narrow 2-6, 7-6(4), 6-4 affair to A&M's Valentin Vacherot. State's Colas ousted LSU's Ben Koch 6-2, 6-4. Ocana had a marathon battle, ultimately defeating Arkansas' Melvin Manuel 6-4, 6-7(4), 1-0(8). The junior Bulldog Strickland would drop a 6-1, 6-2 affair to Razorback Foster Rogers.
