Men’s Tennis Set To Usher In 2020-21 Campaign In Baton Rouge
October 01, 2020 | Men's Tennis
STARKVILLE – With the 2020 spring season being cut short, the Mississippi State men's tennis team has been eager to get back to action and the Bulldogs will do just that this weekend by kicking off fall competition in Baton Rouge, La.
Seven Bulldogs will represent the Maroon and White to open the 2020 fall campaign at the LSU Invitational. Six returning faces will take the court for State, with one new Bulldog ready to make his first collegiate appearance.
"We want to thank the SEC for all of their hard work to allow competition for Men's and Women's tennis this fall," head coach Matt Roberts said. "Our team has gained a perspective that makes us feel very fortunate to be able to compete and develop, which as a coach is something special within our team. A big thanks to LSU for hosting the first of 3 SEC events. This week is a great opportunity to improve with competition vs. Arkansas, LSU, and Texas A&m. With 9 of our 10 players here this fall, we are excited to grow and build with each week and prepare for the spring season."
The tournament, which runs from Oct. 2-4 at the LSU Tennis Complex, will also feature players from SEC foes Arkansas, Texas A&M and host LSU.
Returning for the Bulldogs in 2020-21 are juniors Florian Broska & Stedman Strickland, lone sophomore Gregor Ramskogler, and freshmen Alberto Colas, Nicolas Ocana and Davide Tortora. The lone newcomer, Nemanja Malesevic hailing from Bosnia, will make his collegiate debut this weekend.
In singles, Ramskogler and Tortora will compete in the Tiger Draw this weekend. Broska, Colas and Malesevic are entered into the Purple Draw where Broska and Malesevic are the No. 2 and 3 seeds, respectively. Ocana and Strickland round out State's singles entries in the Gold Draw.
In doubles, MSU sports two of the top three seeded teams in the event, led by Broska and Ocana as the No. 2 seed. Colas and Ramskogler form the No. 3 seeded duo while Malesevic and Strickland represent State's third competing tandem.
Action is slated to begin at 9 a.m. CT each day, starting with one round of doubles and two rounds of singles on Friday. On Saturday, two rounds of doubles will precede a lone round of singles. Sunday's wrap up will feature one round of doubles and singles.
Live stats will be available all three days of the event, as well as live video (for selected matches).
Next Up For MSU…
After returning from this weekend's tournament, the Bulldogs will prepare to host the Bulldog Challenge (Oct. 23-25).
