MSU Wraps Up Fall Slate With Saturday Action At SEC Challenge #2
October 24, 2020 | Women's Tennis
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – To close out the 2020 fall campaign, the Mississippi State women's tennis team concluded competition Saturday at the SEC Challenge #2 indoors at the University of Alabama's Baumgardner Tennis Facility.
Highlighting the day was Bulldog senior transfer Lilian Poling who cruised to a 6-3, 6-1 decision over Eden Richardson of LSU. The Tiger standout has been ranked as high as No. 8 nationally by the ITA during her career.
In another big matchup, State's Alexandra Mikhailuk put up a huge fight against Taylor Bridges of LSU, who was the Tigers' No. 1 player this past spring and ranked top 40 nationally. After dropping the first set, Mikhailuk evened things with a 6-2 second. The two battled through a third set - where just a few points would decide the match - with Bridges barely edging the MSU freshman 6-1, 2-6, 7-5.
In State's only other singles matchup of the day, freshman Marta Falceto was up 1-0 in the first set when her opponent was forced to retire, which added another victory for the Bulldogs.
The lone MSU doubles action of the day saw State's freshman-senior tandem of Mikhailuk and Poling fall to LSU's Paris Corley and Anna Loughlan 6-3.
The SEC Challenge #2 marked the Bulldogs' final stop on their 2020 fall schedule. Poling led the Bulldogs in singles wins (6) and overall wins (9) in her first semester in Starkville. In doubles, Mikhailuk and Poling paced the team this fall, recording three triumphs as a duo.
"I am happy with the progress we made in a shortened fall season," head coach Daryl Greenan said. These are challenging times for everyone, and I am just happy we were able to compete safely. The results we had are encouraging. I think each girl worked hard and were committed to their fitness and tennis. As a result we saw improvement from each one. We played without almost half our team during this tournament season. Adding four players to the five who participated this fall will make us one of the deepest teams we have ever had. I am excited to see what we can do in the spring."
