Colas/Ramskogler, Tortora Notch Opening Day Wins In Bulldog Challenge

Alberto Colas and Gregor Ramskogler in doubles, along with Davide Tortora in singles, recorded wins for State on Friday’s opening day.
STARKVILLE – Mississippi State men's tennis concluded opening day action of the Bulldog Challenge on the MSU campus Friday. The event is being held at MSU's A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre and Rula Tennis Pavilion.
Alberto Colas and Gregor Ramskogler in doubles, along with Davide Tortora in singles, recorded wins for State on Friday's opening day.
The three-day tournament, which also features players from Alabama, Ole Miss and LSU, will continue Saturday morning with the Bulldogs facing off against LSU's contingent in Session 1 at 9 a.m. CT. Alabama and Tennessee's players will square off in the afternoon session at 2 p.m. Ole Miss players will be mixed into each session throughout the day. The day got started with doubles. Colas and Ramskogler grabbed a doubles victory over UT's Giles Hussey and Johannus Monday, battling through a very tight match to pull out a 9-8(2) tiebreak victory. On the other doubles courts, Nemanja Malesevic and Davide Tortora would pair up for their first time and put up a strong fight, ultimately falling 8-5 to Volunteers Martim Prata and Luca Wiedmann. Florian Broska and Nicolas Ocana also battled hard in their doubles match up against Pat Harper and Adam Walton, ultimately falling 8-5 to the UT tandem.
In singles competition, Tortora's triumph came to close all of the afternoon's action. The freshman battled through two tiebreakers to ultimately claim a 7-6(5), 1-6, 7-6(4) marathon triumph over Tennessee's Prata.
In other singles action leading up to that victory, MSU's Broska would battle hard in his first set, taking it to a breaker before dropping it and the match 7-6(2), 6-0 to Walton. The Vols' Harper notched a 6-3, 6-2 decision over the MSU rookie Malesevic.
After a close first set, the Bulldog freshman Colas was edged by the Volunteers' Monday 6-4, 6-3. State's Ramskogler fell 6-1, 6-1 to UT's Hussey. Ocana had a tough day against Tennessee's Luca Wiedmann in a 6-0, 6-0 decision. Wrapping up State's action was junior Stedman Strickland who fell 6-3, 6-3 to Vol Andrew Rogers.
