October 24, 2020 | Men's Tennis
STARKVILLE – The Mississippi State men's tennis team shined in singles action on day two at the Bulldog Challenge, with five Bulldogs - Florian Broska, Alberto Colas, Gregor Ramskogler, Nemanja Malesevic and Davide Tortora - earning victories. Due to wet conditions outside, all of MSU's matchups were contested inside at State's new Rula Tennis Pavilion.
The three-day tournament, which also features players from Alabama, Ole Miss and LSU, will conclude Sunday morning with LSU facing off against Tennessee's contingent in Session 1 at 9 a.m. CT. The Bulldogs will square off against Alabama in the afternoon session at 2 p.m. Ole Miss players will be mixed into each session throughout the day. Though fans cannot attend due to COVID protocols, the tournament can be followed through live video and stats
The day got started with doubles once again Saturday as the Bulldogs battled three Tiger tandems from LSU. On court one, Broska paired with Nicolas Ocana where the duo had a tough morning against LSU's Ronnie Hohmann and Rafael Wagner in a 6-1 decision. After a close set, the freshman Bulldog duo of Malesevic and Tortora were edged by the Tiger tandem of Malik Bhatnagar and Ben Koch 7-6(2). Wrapping up State's doubles action was the pair of Colas and Ramskogler who fell 7-6(6) to Boris Kozlov and Nick Watson.
In singles competition, Malesevic and Tortora's triumphs came to close all of the action for State.
The Bulldog rookie Malesevic captured his first set 6-3 against Bhatnagar. The Tiger would claim the second 6-4 before Malesevic would go on to dominate the final set, winning the match 6-3, 4-6, 6-2. Tortora battled back after dropping the first set 6-3, to rally and oust LSU's Wagner 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.
In State's other three singles matches, the wins would come in more comfortable fashion. The MSU junior Broska bested LSU's Hohmann 6-2, 6-4. Finishing right behind him would be the freshman Colas as he dominated LSU's Kozlov in 6-1, 6-2 fashion. The sophomore Ramskogler fended off LSU's Tom Pisane to win 6-3, 7-6(3).
Rounding out State's action was junior Stedman Strickland who fell 6-1, 6-0 to Tiger Ben Koch. Ocana's scheduled matchup was not contested as LSU's Watson defaulted.
