Mississippi State soccer faces Ole Miss in Oxford on Oct. 2.
STARKVILLE – The Mississippi State soccer team heads to Oxford, Mississippi on Friday, October 2 to face Ole Miss for the 18th installment of the Magnolia Cup and the 26th matchup in the series overall. Kick is set for 7 p.m. at the Ole Miss Soccer Complex and will be broadcast on ESPNU.
The Magnolia Cup game originated in 2003 from an exhibition between the two and blossomed from there. In the Cup series, the trophy has stayed in the hands of the Rebels for the last six seasons despite two draws. The last time out, State landed in a double overtime draw, 1-1, on their home turf in Starkville.
The last time Mississippi State faced Ole Miss was in a heartbreaker in Orange Beach, Alabama in the first round of the SEC Tournament. It was the Bulldogs' first game in the Tournament since 2004. State ultimately fell, 2-1, to Ole Miss.
"These ladies know all about what the rivalry means and are excited for the game," said head coach James Armstrong. "It's important that our preparation and focus remains consistent and that we grow between each game. Last year's games against Ole Miss were typical rivalry games with lots of emotion and adversity. We know that we have to be prepared for anything, compete, and execute the game plan."
Ole Miss (1-1-0) is coming off their first win of the season, defeating LSU in a 1-0 victory in Baton Rouge. The Rebels lost to Texas A&M, 0-3, in Oxford in their first match. They are led by sophomore Saydie Holland who scored their only goal of the season against the Tigers, junior Haleigh Stackpole who has five shots including three on target, and their netminder, junior Ashley Orkus. Senior Channing Foster and sophomore Mo O'Connor are players to watch as well as O'Connor took four shots against LSU and Foster has scored 30 goals in the past three seasons. The Rebels return nine of their starters from 2019 and 29 of their 32 goals scored last season returned as well.
The Bulldogs (0-0-2) have put up a fight in the first two games of the season against Auburn and Alabama, with both coming to a draw. The newcomers have put in work, with goalkeeper Maddy Anderson tallying six saves against the Tide, Marcella Cash racking up five shots against Auburn, and KK Pavatt seeing more than 90 minutes in each match. Ky Burroughs, Macey Hodge, Birna Jóhannsdóttir, Elle McCaslin, and Olivia Simpson have all seen playing time as well.

Stronger Together
In early September, Mississippi State helped spearhead a campaign with 12 other institutions throughout the state of Mississippi. They announced the launching of the "Stronger Together" initiative to unite the state's athletics programs and communities in support of togetherness, diversity and equality.
During the 2020-21 academic year, college and university athletics programs in Mississippi will incorporate a special logo on their uniforms, equipment, warm-up gear or bags. The logo will serve as a visual representation of the state's schools coming together and will feature school-specific branding with the words "Stronger Together" inside the outline of Mississippi.
The campaign was created for the state's colleges and universities to come together, listen, learn and support student-athletes through their challenges, stresses and pressures related to events around the country. As part of the initiative, the schools will unite in their efforts to promote social justice and racial equality through advocacy, awareness and education.
