STARKVILLE – For the Mississippi State men's tennis team, this weekend is more than hosting the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's 2020 Kick-Off Weekend, it is about showing the nation that - even with a lineup of fresh faces - the Bulldogs are still a force to reckon with.
The 2018 and 2019 SEC Tournament Champion Bulldogs (4-1) open up the 2020 ITA Kick-Off Weekend against No. 19 Georgia (1-0) on Saturday. First serve in the battle of the Bulldogs is set for not before 1 p.m. CT. No. 15 South Carolina (3-0) and No. 22 Oklahoma (3-1) will open the event at 10:30 a.m. Saturday. All Kick-Off Weekend matches are slated to be played at MSU's A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre and admission is free.
"If you like college tennis, then this is one weekend you do not want to miss as you can witness four premier programs battle it out to book a spot at the ITA National Indoor Championship," Mississippi State head coach Matt Roberts said. "All programs represented this weekend have a great team history. This weekend will be a great challenge to all teams competing to advance to Wisconsin. The ITA Kick-Off Weekend is a great opportunity for our team to develop more confidence as we teach our young Bulldogs how to compete against anyone in the country. We are excited to have the home court advantage and get the opportunity to play in front of some of the best college tennis fans in the nation."
This is MSU's 11th appearance in one of the ITA's marquee events, which features the top teams in collegiate tennis. All are vying for one of 15 spots in the 2020 ITA National Team Indoor Championship, to be held Feb. 14-17 in Madison, Wisc.
