STARKVILLE – Things return to normal for the Mississippi State track and field team this week. The Bulldogs will compete in many of the standard championship events for the first time when the gun is fired at the Vanderbilt Invitational on Feb. 17-18.
Five ranked programs will be in action in Nashville, Tennessee, this weekend including, No. 1 Florida State, No. 5 Indiana and No. 23 Oklahoma on the men's side and No. 11 Florida State and No. 24 Miami (Fla.) on the women's side. The SEC will be represented by host Vanderbilt, along with Auburn, Ole Miss and MSU.
The meet will be held inside Vanderbilt's Multipurpose Facility and tickets are available at the door for $5. Doors open at 3 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. Saturday.
"With this being the first meet where we're competing in the standard events, what I'm looking for is for people to compete to win their races," head coach Chris Woods said. "Performances, times, distances, heights, all of that stuff, that's really not my main focus this week. My main focus is seeing how we compete. Whatever event you're in, I want to see people competing to win their section of the event overall."
Competition opens at 4 p.m. CT on Friday with the women's high jump and weight throw. Last week, Tiffaney Johnson broke into MSU's all-time top five in the weight throw and will look to improve upon her career-best 16.75m (54-11.5) throw. The men's and women's long jump will also be contested before action turns to the track at 7 p.m.
The Bulldogs will run their first 200m races of the year on Friday night, and State's women's distance medley relay team looks to improve upon the No. 5 time in the nation. Friday evening closes with the 5000m.
First gun on Saturday is scheduled for 10 a.m. with the unseeded sections of the 3000m. Bulldogs will also compete in the women's pole vault and women's shot put along with unseeded sections of the mile, 800m and 400m before breaking for lunch.
Prelims open the afternoon for both the 60m hurdles and 60m. The seeded sections of the mile, 400m and 800m will run in that order throughout the afternoon session. Peyton Mickelson will compete in the invitational section of the pole vault, and Jeremiah Pierce will compete in the men's shot put before the 4x400m relays close the day.
The Bulldogs will be off next week and return to action on Jan. 31 at the two-day Power 5 Invitational hosted by Michigan.
