Bulldogs Collect 38 Top-10 Finishes on Opening Weekend
January 10, 2020 | Track & Field
by Brian Ogden, Assistant Director/Communications
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Mississippi State's track and field team had a very successful debut at the UAB Blazer Invitational on Friday to open the 2020 indoor season.
In Chris Woods' first official meet as head coach since the earning the job full-time over the summer, the Bulldogs posted 38 top-10 finishes and won four events, including three of the four relays.
"I think we're in a better position now than we were at this point last year," Woods said. "We still have a lot of individuals that definitely have the talent to compete on the conference and national level. They just have to get the confidence in themselves to do so. That's not only on them, but it's on the coaching staff as well. I'm really excited about the direction that we're going."
Freshman Cathrina Morris burst onto the scene in her collegiate debut, reaching the finals of the 60m hurdles. In her third hurdles race of the day after starting in the qualifying heats, she placed eighth overall. Her best run came in the prelims where she crossed the line in 8.79.
Morris also ran the 300m and a leg of the winning 4x400m relay.
In the field events, Tiffaney Johnson started her senior campaign off on a high note, cracking the MSU all-time top five in the weight throw with a personal-best, 16.75m (54-11.5). Associate head coach April Thomas has now coached all but one of State's top-five marks in the event.
Two other Bulldogs recorded personal bests in the distance events. Luke Zacharias shaved eight seconds off his 3000m time, crossing the line in 8:51.73. Blake Beavers also took just shy of eight seconds off his prior best in the 5000m. Beavers finished second in 15:46.81.
Dejon Devroe won the men's 1000m in 2:26.24. State also won both the men's and women's distance medley relays.
"It's going to be important that next week we build upon all the momentum that we got from this week," Woods said. "Each competition gets a little bit harder, so what I want to see from the team is that they step up their level each week. That should set us up for a successful indoor conference championship."
The Bulldogs will compete at the Commodore Invitational in Nashville, Tennessee, beginning Friday, Jan. 17.
