Three Diamond Dawgs among actives rosters of postseason qualifiers to end MLB regular season

STARKVILLE – As the Major League Baseball Postseason begins on Tuesday (Oct. 1) in Milwaukee, Mississippi State baseball saw three alums among active rosters for playoff teams at the end of the regular season. Mississippi State Athletics will honor each of those Diamond Dawgs with "State to The Show" billboards in their respective MLB cities this week.

Starting pitchers Dakota Hudson (St. Louis) and Brandon Woodruff (Milwaukee), along with infielder Nate Lowe (Tampa Bay) each finished the regular season on their respective organization's active rosters. There have been five MSU baseball alums to win World Series titles, with the most recent coming in 2018 from Mitch Moreland and the Boston Red Sox.

Woodruff will begin the postseason as the starting pitcher in Milwaukee's National League Wild Card game at Washington on Tuesday, October 1 at 7 p.m. CT. Woodruff led the Brewers with 11 victories and 143 strikeouts during the 2019 regular season, even after missing the better part of a month due to injury. A first-time All-Star in 2019, Woodruff is 1-1 in four career postseason appearances with 20 strikeouts in 12 1/3 innings of work. He also hit one of the iconic home runs of the 2018 postseason, launching a Clayton Kershaw offering deep to right-center field in game one of the National League Championship Series.

While the rotations for the National League Division Series between Central Division champion St. Louis and East Division winner Atlanta have not been set yet, Hudson will factor into at some point. The right-hander leads all MLB rookies with a club-leading 16 victories. His 3.35 ERA is second in the Cardinals' rotation among qualifying pitchers, while his 136 strikeouts are fourth on the staff.

Lowe played a major role in helping Tampa Bay reach the MLB Postseason, as his walk-off home run in the 11th inning versus Boston on Sept. 21 kept the Rays squarely in the hunt for October baseball. Over his last seven games of 2019, Lowe drove in three RBIs and scored four runs, including the walk-off homer. In April, Lowe became the 61st Diamond Dawg in program history to make his major league debut.
