STARKVILLE – Mississippi State volleyball fell in straight sets for just the first time in 2019 on Sunday, dropping its SEC home opener to LSU at the Newell-Grissom Building.
LSU (8-4, 2-0 SEC) opened with a 25-20 opening set win. The Bulldogs (11-3, 0-2 SEC) kept it close in the final two frames, but the Tigers sneaked past in both.
"It was not the best day on our home court," MSU volleyball coach Julie Darty said. "We had tremendous fan support, and we can definitely feel the energy of our fans, but I don't feel like our team had that same energy, execution or focus that we had Friday night.
"It was one of those uncertain matches where we really weren't sure of ourselves, and that's what we're trying to get away from. I thought we were a little tentative and hesitant. We have to be consistent all the time, on the road, in our home court, in practice, in matches."
Sophomore Paige Shaw led State with nine kills on a .273 hitting percentage. Senior Alleah Stamatis had 24 assists, while junior Kanani Price tallied a team-best 14 digs in the libero jersey.
"Offensively, we have to produce better numbers," Darty said. "We have to kill more balls and score more points. This week in practice, we're going to work on all of that while being more efficient in all those aspects."
First Set (LSU 25, Mississippi State 20)
The Tigers separated themselves after a pair of service aces landed back-to-back to give them a 15-12 lead. A kill from Shaw got State within three at 22-19, but LSU held its advantage to take the opening set.
Second Set (LSU 26, Mississippi State 24)
LSU needed extra points to defeat the Bulldogs in the second set. Down 23-19, the Bulldogs grinded out a 4-0 run to tie the set, capped by a kill from Shaw. State tied it again at 24-24, but back-to-back Tiger kills gave LSU a 2-0 match lead.
Stamatis had 10 assists in each of the final two sets.
Third Set (LSU 25, Mississippi State 23)
A 5-0 scoring run late in the final frame gave MSU a 22-21 lead, but the Bulldogs couldn't nail it down as LSU took the third set and the match.

Mississippi State continues SEC play when in-state rival Ole Miss comes to Starkville on Friday, Oct. 4. Friday's match will be the first of four nationally televised matches for MSU, airing on SEC Network.
"Now we have to think about what's next," Darty said. "I hope this team is humble and hungry and ready to work hard this week because on Friday night, we need to have it loud and rowdy in here as we welcome Ole Miss to Starkville."
