STARKVILLE – Monigo Karnley's shot was perfect, and the reward was sweet.
The sophomore sent Mississippi State home with its first conference win away from home since 2017 with a rocket to the upper-90 in the 89th minute on Sunday afternoon.
Karnley's goal was State's second in the final five minutes of a physical, comeback effort against Kentucky. In the 87th minute, Zakirah McGillivary attempted a shot from the left side of the box that was blocked but made it through the traffic to the far post.
Hailey Farrington-Bentil had made a great run to find the loose ball and tapped it home for her second goal of the year to tie the match at one goal a side.
"Obviously, an unbelievable effort by the girls," head coach James Armstrong said. "Playing against a very good Kentucky team, we found ourselves 1-0 down and just didn't quite get the bounces. We persevered and kept getting chances. For this group to have two goals in the last five minutes says everything you need to know about this team. I can't say enough words about how proud we are of them all."
It looked like MSU had opened the scoring in the 12th minute when MaKayla Waldner broke through the Wildcat's defense. She laid the ball off to Karnley who scored, but the goal was waved off for offsides.
Kentucky then opened the scoring with a penalty kick in the 17th minute. The Wildcats' leading scorer Hannah Richardson put the ball past Gabby English for a 1-0 lead. That remained the only goal for the majority of the match.
State outshot the Wildcats 7-4 in the first half and earned three corners while surrendering just one. The Bulldogs turned on the pressure in the second half, firing 12 shots. Karnley twice looked set to score in the box before going down, but State could not draw a penalty kick of its own.
As the clock wound down following Farrington-Bentil's tally, Karnley settled a loose ball around midfield and dribbled to the top of the box. She shot with her left foot and drove the ball just over the keeper's hands into the top right corner of the net to win the match.
MSU is now 3-0 on the road as the Bulldogs claimed their first road win in conference play since a 3-0 victory at Georgia in 2017. It was State's first win against Kentucky since 2015 and the Bulldogs first in Lexington since 2004.
The Bulldogs will travel to Alabama next week to play on Friday night. Kickoff in Tuscaloosa is set for 7 p.m. CT on SEC Network+.
