TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Coming off its first SEC road victory since 2017, Mississippi State soccer will look to remain perfect away from home in 2019 when the Bulldogs meet Alabama on Friday night. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. CT on SEC Network+.
"We have had a great week of practice in preparation to face a good Alabama team," head coach James Armstrong said. "We are looking to build on our last performance and know we are going to need to be sharp on both sides of the ball."
MSU claimed a 2-1 victory at Kentucky on Sunday, scoring twice in the final four minutes. The win was State's first against the Wildcats since 2015 and first in Lexington since 2004.
Now, the Bulldogs look to make more history with a win in Tuscaloosa. A win would mark the first time State has won two conference games on the road since 2015 and just the fifth time in the history of the program. The Bulldogs would also improve to 4-0 on the road this year, which would be the third-most road wins in program history behind 2001 (6) and 1997 (5).
Downing the Crimson Tide would also give MSU seven points in the SEC standings just four games into league play. That would mark the best conference start in program history. Reaching the five point mark with a tie would be the Bulldogs' best start since 2015.
Alabama enters Friday's match with an 6-4-1 record identical to MSU. The Crimson Tide boats the No. 24 RPI in the nation, and the teams share a common opponent in undefeated No. 4/5 BYU. Alabama also lost to the Cougars by one goal, but were shut out in their meeting.
In non-conference play, Alabama outscored its opponents 17-6, outshot them 135-63 and earned 67 corner kicks with their opponents only earning 15. The Tide is receiving votes in the latest coaches' poll after claiming an overtime victory against Tennessee last week.
The Bulldogs will play just one match this week, but return home on Thursday, Oct. 10 to host Auburn. That match will also air on SEC Network+ with kickoff set for 6 p.m.
