DALLAS, Texas – Mississippi State men's golf had four Bulldogs shoot even or lower during Monday's second round of the Trinity Forest Invitational at the Trinity Forest Golf Club.
Head coach Dusty Smith said, "I felt like the golf course and the conditions were ideal for some good scoring today. We got off to a slow start but were able to capitalize on our back nine. We did a better job of not beating ourselves today. We need to do a better job of staying positive, especially if things aren't going our way."
Junior Cameron Clarke led the squad with a score of two-under, 69. He secured a bogey-free back nine and carded one of two eagles from the Bulldogs on hole one.
Sophomore Ford Clegg recorded State's other eagle, also on the first hole. He finished the second round with a one-under, 70 after he sunk a pair of birdies over his last five holes.
Senior Garrett Johnson improved his round one score by four strokes and posted a one-under, 70. He got hot on the front nine with a birdie on the first hole followed by back-to-back birdies on holes four and five.
Also improving his round two score was freshman Hunter Logan. He fired a bogey-free front nine to finish the day at even-par, 71.
The Bulldogs are tied for first among the 17-team field with three eagles recorded for the tournament. In addition to Clarke's and Clegg's in round two, sophomore Austin Vukovits carded one on the par-four, hole five in the first round. On Monday, Vukovits rounded out the Bulldogs team score with a seven-over, 78.
As a team, State improved its first-round score by 17 strokes to log a score of 280 in the second round at the 7,486-yard Trinity Forest Golf Club. The Bulldogs finished the day in sole possession of 13th place.
"I'm proud of the guys for staying patient out there today. We hit a lot of quality shots and had several opportunities out there. We need to continue the momentum we got from our back 9 into our final round. The most important thing for us tomorrow is to embrace the opportunity that is in front of us and to stay in the present moment. Everyone has a job to do and we need to have all of us in it for us to be successful," Smith said.
State will tee off the final round at 8:50 a.m. CT from the 10th hole. Tuesday will mark the final round of 18-hole stroke play and the 54-hole event.
