State’s Women’s Tennis Grabs Two More Wins To Close Debbie Southern Fall Classic

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Mississippi State women's tennis capped their final day at the Debbie Southern Fall Classic Sunday, highlighted by a finals appearance by freshman Alexandra Mikhailuk and two seventh-place nods from Marta Falceto and Sara Lizariturry in their respective draws.
After advancing to the finals of Flight 4 in her first collegiate tournament, Mikhailuk was downed by Saby Nihalani of Wake Forest in Sunday's title match 6-4, 6-2. Mikhailuk finished with a 4-2 overall ledger for the weekend with both losses coming in the championship match of her respective singles and doubles draws.
MSU rookie Marta Falceto dominated South Carolina's Kennedy Wicker in straight-sets 6-1, 6-3 in the seventh-place match for Flight 8 to end her first weekend in the Maroon and White on a high note.
In Flight 9, senior Sara Lizariturry toppled Florida State's Mira Stegman 6-4, 6-2 to take seventh place in that draw.
State's 41st-ranked Antonaki was outlasted by No. 57 Emmanuelle Salas of Florida State in a tough 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 decision in the seventh-place match of Flight 1 Sunday.
Junior Magda Adaloglou, ranked 115th nationally, was edged by Julia Adams of host Furman 6-4, 6-3 in Sunday's Flight 3 seventh-place match.
In the Flight 6 consolation finals, after taking set 1, sophomore Tamara Racine was edged out by Vanderbilt's Emma Kurtz 4-6, 7-6(4), 6-1.
Rounding out State's play Sunday, Bulldog junior Meredith Roberts fell to Sophia Sassoli of Georgia Tech in the Flight 10 consolation finals.
"The level this weekend was extremely high," head coach Daryl Greenan said. "With five out of the top 10 and nine out of the top 25 schools entered, we knew we were in for a huge challenge. The main thing it exposed was our lack of match play over the summer."
"I am happy we were able to earn upsets in four matches. We were solid overall in doubles which was a nice highlight. The collective effort and commitment I see from this group on a day-to-day basis is outstanding. We have plenty of talent and it is just a matter of time before we maximize that talent. We will build on the positives while learning from the losses moving forward."
Members of the Bulldog squad will next compete at the Baylor Invitational in Waco, Texas, on Oct. 4-6. Others will resume action in Tulsa, Oklahoma, at the ITA All-American Championships beginning Oct. 7.
